We have raccoons! I realize that for most people this isn't a big deal but I'm always (easily) excited by glimpses of wildlife out here in suburbia.
I took the dogs for a walk last Friday and saw one trundling by our backyard fence. It ran away before I could get the camera out of my pocket but I was able to get some shots last night during Raccoon Watch 2008! Our next-door neighbors spotted one of the raccoons walking across our yard (they were out looking for one of their cats). Next thing I know, both next-door neighbors, the neighbor from across the street, The Brit and I were shining flashlights into the cedar tree next to our house. There were 2 raccoons, one in the tree and one of the ground. The general consensus is someone must have been feeding them because they didn't seem disturbed by our humanly presence at all.
I actually don't mind the raccoons, we live in a relatively wooded area after all, but I don't exactly want them opening a raccoon condo so close to our home. The neighbors are freaked out because they all have cats and are afraid said cats will become raccoon chow. I think one of them is going to call animal control and see if the pair can be relocated.
