Last weekend The Brit and I went to Austin, TX for a little getaway. It was pretty humid but tolerable as long as we were inside where the A/C was cranking. We hit 6th Street the first night which was pretty fun until the night wore on and the place was overrun by college students. I felt very, very old. The next day we set out for Lake Travis and had lunch a Tex-Mex place with a beautiful view of the lake. We watched boats zip past, some with water-skiers hooked to them, others with people trying (sometimes unsuccessfully) to hold onto large inner tubes. Later we went to the Capitol Building which was quite impressive. All in all, a very pleasant afternoon.
On Monday Alex had to work and I had planned on doing some outdoorsy things but that wasn't to be. It rained from morning to early evening so I drove up to San Marcos and did some damage at the outlet mall. We had a fun time in Austin and I would definitely recommend it as a great place to spend a weekend. I'm not sure if I would put Austin in my top 5 places of where I'd like to live but I'm so sick of Phoenix at this point that I may revise that in the near future.
My only advice on visiting Austin is to choose your hotel room carefully. We were in a place with paper-thin walls and were privileged to hearing, on the first night, 2 men gesticulating about what they wanted to do to certain female associates and on the next evening the loud coughing and wheezing of a person I immediately nicknamed "tuberculosis man." Thankfully, our last evening was relatively quiet.
